ClearURLs is a privacy extension for the Chrome browser that automatically shortens URLs on webpages you visit. It does this by adding a button to your toolbar and when you click it, it will shorten the URL for you. You can also customize how it shortens URLs so that they are more readable or easier to remember.

Our take

ClearURLs strips the tracking junk out of links, the long tails of utm and click-id parameters that follow you between sites, and it does it quietly in the background. It is a small, focused tool that will not transform your privacy on its own, and it occasionally over-trims a link that needs a parameter to work. Add it as a low-effort layer alongside a real content blocker; just do not expect it to do anything you would notice day to day.

Why it matters: Weak copyleft protects the project's own files: improvements to them stay open, while the code can still sit alongside closed-source software.
