Google’s own Android phone line, recommended as the hardware base for a de-Googled setup because it ships with an unlockable bootloader, a Titan M secure element, and multi-year guaranteed security update commitments.

Our take

The Pixel is the recommended hardware for GrapheneOS and CalyxOS precisely because Google built in what other Android vendors skip: a proper unlockable bootloader that can be relocked after flashing a custom OS, hardware-backed attestation via the Titan M chip, and one of the longest security update windows in the Android ecosystem. Ironically, the phone made by the world’s largest ad company becomes its own best privacy hardware once you replace the OS. The catch is obvious: if you use it with stock Android and a Google account, you are handing Google a detailed profile. The Pixel’s privacy story is entirely about what you do after you buy it.
