Nextcloud is functionally similar to Dropbox, Office 365 or Google Drive. It can be hosted in the cloud or on-premises. It is scalable from home office solutions based on the low cost Raspberry Pi all the way through to full sized data centre solutions that support millions of users.
The right answer when the real goal is owning your infrastructure rather than renting privacy from a vendor, scaling from a Raspberry Pi to a company server. The catch is that you are now the administrator: you handle setup, updates, backups, and security, and that is a genuine commitment, not a download. Choose it if self-hosting appeals and you will maintain it; if you want storage that someone else keeps running, a hosted service is the saner path.

Why it matters: The network clause is the point. Anyone who runs a modified version as a hosted service has to publish those changes, so the code handling your data stays inspectable. This is why privacy-first projects reach for AGPL.
